SERENDIPITY

A film review by Camilo Arenivar

Serendipity is the romantic comedy of the Fall Movie season. It is warm hearted, cute and pleasant. It is a movie that almost everyone will like. It is kind of hard not to. Even if you are accustomed to car chases and fight scenes, you might just get sucked in by this one.

The word serendipity means: The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident. This is clearly spelled out at the beginning of the movie and it is important to keep that in mind. It is also the name of a coffe house in New York City that two people find themselves intrigued with each other. Those people are Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale). John and Sara meet one day at Christmas time in a department store years ago due to a happy accident. Sara is a strong believer in fate, and despite a wonderful time together, a fate game she plays renders them separated and they never see each other again. Now it is present time, and both are engaged to other people. A few happy accidents start happening again.

This is a highly romantic film, an excellent date movie or feel good movie. It reminds you things about love and relationships that those in them should remember. It is a very good charming story that brings a warmness to your heart, something that feels really good these days. In addition to just being cute and romantic, it is funny too.

Cusack is the same as he always has been and Kate Beckinsale does well in her follow up to this summer's Pearl Harbor. Not only is their acting good, but the supporting cast are the ones that bring in the laughs.

For an enjoyable night at the movies, check out Serendipity. If you can't stand sappy romantic comedies, stay as far away as you can from this one!

60-70: Barely passing! Only slightly entertaining, not worth paying for at the movie theater. Rent it if you like this type of film otherwise stay away! (Poor = D)
50-60: Don't even rent this! Unless you like BAD movies. (Failure = F)
0-50: Run from it! Boycott the video store that would carry it! This is HORRIBLE, how did it get made?
