Now this movie I have to admit was quite a pleasant surprise. For a great romantic comedy I have to highly recommend Bridget Jones's Diary.
This is one of those Miramax films where everyone has a British accent - but not too much. It does end up being a very funny and charming film that will make you smile and leave feeling like you have seen a good movie!
Bridget Jones (Rene Zelleweger) is a 32-year-old British woman working as a publicist for a publishing company. This particular New Year she decides she wants to change. Tired of being hopelessly single she makes resolutions to quit smoking, drink less, exercise etc. All the things we say we will do. What's funny is following her through in her journey, seeing how life sends you those interesting things that you just have to do something with. Everyone in the film is portrayed in a realistic hilarious way. From her wacky mom to her boss (Hugh Grant) that wants to sleep with her, all the characters seem like real people. This story could be about many people's lives, but writers Richard Curtis and Andrew Davies have done an excellent job of bringing Bridget's diary to life with humor and realism. It's a movie about life that makes fun of life and the players in it. The characters and story are interesting enough to keep your attention focused the entire 97 minutes.
I'd also like to point out that Zelleweger's weight gain for this role and the depth she poured into this character are immense. I can't imagine anyone else having played the role as well. This may be the role to finally lock her the recognition she is beginning to deserve.
Yes, this is more of a "chick flick" but I think that a lot of men can enjoy this too. It's not for your typical action film-loving male, but for anyone that can appreciate a humorous romantic drama, you really shouldn't miss this movie!
