CurrentlyPlaying.com is owned and operated by Camilo Arenivar. It was started initially as Camilo’s Current Movie Reviews in December 1997, shortly after I published my personal home page, Camilo’s World. I have always enjoyed writing, and was frequently told I write well. I also liked movies, so I combined my joy of movies and writing into one thing. I posted a link to my website at my old job, SunAmerica. I started getting comments from a lot of people saying they enjoy my reviews etc etc. And eventually I began getting a lot of hits from people who were doing searches at Alta Vista. Needless to say, I decided it was time to make a stand alone site for my movie reviews and just see how far I could go with it. I did some polling for the name, most of the good ones were already taken. On May 1st, 2000, CurrentlyPlaying.com was born. It received a significant amount of traffic, Between May 2000 and end of 2002, CurrentlyPlaying.com had received over 108,000 hits and 14,854 unique visitors! CurrentlyPlaying.com came up FIRST at Netscape.net for "Web Sites" when you search for "current movie reviews".
In 2002, Joe Rickey, one of the main contributors had graduated from college and was not able to contribute as much content to the site and Camilo Arenivar became heavily involved in the local Spanish Rock music scene, assisting his close friend Jose Amadeus with band management, promotion, and PR. That could only last so long, as many in the independent music scene will attest, management and promotion at that level is a very thankless job. The site remained exactly the same for nearly three years until 2006, when Camilo realized he can use the power of blogs to make updating the site less time consuming. All he needed was a layout and design which he contracted to his good friend Ruben Tapia. Now, CurrentlyPlaying.com enters a new era.
REVIEWSCurrentlyPlaying.com's philosophy regarding the reviews is simple. Is this a movie people will want to see? Normal people, not stuffy movie critics, but the ones that value the dollar they put down on a movie. My goal was to present an objective view of the movie without giving away any key details about the movies. I am very adamant about not telling if certain people die or any of the secrets of a movie. I don’t want to ruin it for people. I basically want to convey whether it was good entertainment, how was the acting, the story, action, etc. I try to determine what the entertainment value of the movie is. Is this a movie you want to see in a theater? Wait for DVD? Cable? Avoid at all costs?
